10 super foods that increase fertility in females

We all know how important a balanced diet is when preparing for pregnancy. The foods that you eat prior to pregnancy can get you pregnant faster, reduce your miscarriage chances and impact the lifelong health of your baby.  But not all foods were created equal.  Some foods pack more of a punch when it comes to preparing for pregnancy.  There are many foods that increase fertility in females. Make sure you include these fertility superfoods as often as you can in when you’re trying to conceive. 

Eggs:

“Eggs for your eggs!” This nutrient rich food supports egg quality, cell membranes, fetal brain development, placental function and is a complete protein which helps with healthy hormone production. Eggs are great for breakfast, snacks, lunches and dinners. Have up to 2 a day.

Sardines:

This oily fish supports a host of important functions including brain development, hormone balance, immune support, cell membranes and improves the genetic quality of developing oocytes (your eggs). Sardines small size means they are lower in mercury than other oily fish.

Avocados:

Shaped like a pregnant belly, avocados rank highly in their ability to support fertility. They provide good fats crucial for brain development, packed with nutrients and antioxidants to protect every cell in your body. Also, great for sperm health. One serve = 1/4 of an avocado. Aim for at least one serve each day.

Beetroot:

Beetroot increases the blood flow to your reproductive organs, which helps transfer vital nutrients to your cells and boosts libido. Rich in betaine, which is essential for fertility and fetal development. Add beetroot to your smoothies, or roast and add to salads.

Brazil Nuts:

These nuts are rich in selenium which supports thyroid function and eliminates mercury, lead and cadmium from the body. By clearing these heavy metals, you reduce the risk of miscarriage and increase the likelihood of a successful pregnancy. Just a few can give you all the selenium you need to increase your fertility.

Liver:

During pregnancy iron needs increase 1.5x so it is important to have optimal levels prior to pregnancy. Liver is particularly high in iron which helps transports oxygen around the body and to your baby as it develops; deficiency can lead to pre-term birth and pregnancy complications.  Just 30 grams every few days is enough. Hide it in bolognaise sauce or make a pâté if the thought of eating liver scares you.

Citrus:

Oranges, lemons, limes and grapefruits and other citrus fruits are foods that can help increase fertility in females by regulating ovulation and creating a healthy environment for eggs. The antioxidant qualities can help by preventing damage from harmful effects of chemicals such as fluoride and mercury.

Chia Seeds:

High in protein and fibre, chia seeds help regulate bowel function and eliminate toxins from your body. They serve as food for your gut bacteria. They slow carbohydrate absorption leading to a more balanced blood sugar level which helps every aspect of fertility, hormone balance and uterine receptivity. Chia can be made into a pudding and eaten as a snack with berries.

Spinach:

Known for its high iron content, spinach is a fibre-rich superfood.  Its high levels of vitamin K contribute to bone health. It possesses anti-inflammatory properties to help with protecting egg quality. Ensure you choose organic spinach to avoid pesticide exposure.

Apples:

An apple a day really does keep the doctor away. They are rich in antioxidants, vitamins and minerals. Their ability to help with detoxification of excess hormones is what sets them apart as a fertility superfood. Best to eat with nuts to help balance blood sugar levels.

Of course, everyone’s body if different when it comes to what is needed but including these superfoods will give you a great foundation when it comes to increasing your fertility when trying to conceive.
